Hearld Sun
If you think this price war is going to help us long term dont be crazy.
DON'T be fooled by the phoney supermarket giant price war. Susie O’brien from the hearld sun has done a opioion peice about this and long story short she is extreamly sceptical. She goes on to say:
The supermarkets might claim they are happy to "absorb" the fall in prices, but they are not charities and you can bet they'll also be hiking the prices of other goods -- especially speciality items that are hard to get elsewhere.
You will pay less for staples like bread and milk, but this is actually a way to get you to shop more and spend more.
Or supermarkets will lift prices on other essential products, like petrol in the 60 per cent of petrol stations they own. Fuel monitor FUELtrac yesterday accused Coles of lifting petrol prices by up to 15c at some stations -- despite wholesale price drops -- in a bid to cover losses on bread and milk.
This is not a case of supermarkets offering a public service, or helping out cash-strapped families. Of course, that's exactly what Coles -- which is leading the charge in dropping prices -- wants you to believe.
Such a duopoly would be unthinkable in just about any other country in the world -- but not here.
