PETROL prices have fallen from five month highs as a drop in the international benchmark price begins to filter through to the pumps.

According to figures released by the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the average price at the pump for unleaded fell .4 cents to 127.2 cents per litre for the week ending January 22.

This is the first drop for over three weeks, with the period between December 27 and January 22 seeing the largest increase in more than 11 months.

In that period prices rose by over six cents per litre, reaching a five month high of 127.6 cents per litre.

The Singapore petrol price, the main benchmark for Australian prices, built on last weeks drop, falling .8 cents to 60.1 cents per litre, signalling further drops in the Australian price in the coming weeks.

Perth remained the cheapest city in which to fill up with prices falling 3.1 cents to 120.5 cents per litre, while Canberra and Darwin remained the most expensive cities at 135.5 cents per litre each.
