Don’t expect to be able to push “credit” when you are using a debit card at Woolworths. In fact you could get charged as much as $2.50 per transaction at Woolworths, Dan Murphys, Dick Smiths, and Big W.
To get away from costly credit cards, Australians are turning to debit cards instead. However, Woolworths has thrown a major spanner in the works by changing the rules of the game. They have done this to save money, as every time we hit credit while using a debit card they get charged a fee by the banks.Woolworths has realised it could make money by forcing customers to select the "cheque" or "savings" options, Choice said yesterday.
The average charge for pressing savings is about 80c, RateCity found. The highest was $2.50, charged by Australian Central Credit Union. But it is non-bank customers who are hardest hit. Credit unions have issued more than 1.5 million Visa debit cards.
